Did it really happen or is she delusional?

TL;DR This is a great thriller, felt realistic and made me actually gag at certain parts.

So my quest for thrillers continued and I came across r/suggestmeabook and got this book reccommended there. Though this book was super interesting and pretty short, it took me 14 days to complete. As I'm typing this I feel sleep deprived and tired because I finished it literally 4AM yesterday ;__; But anyway, here's my spoiler-free review.

The usual stuff I add here:

Author Ashley Audrain
Pages307
Published DateJanuary 5th 2021

Premise: Blythe is determined to be a good mother for her new born child, Violet but soon she starts to notice something disturbing and unsettling about her daughter as she grows up...

Plot

I (as usual) went in without even reading the premise and didn't know where the story was heading initially. In the beginning we see the protagonist trying really hard to be a mother. I found the depiction of the struggles of the protagonist very realistic, though I don't really know anything about motherhood. We also get to see her past, her relationship with her mother as well her mother's relationship with her own mother. Her personality is shaped by her childhood experience (and they are pretty traumatic).

One thing I have to mention here is that this book didn't feel like a typical mystery thriller. A lot of things where predictable and there were no plot twists. Even then I found this book very interesting. I guess this could be catagorized as psychological thriller or fiction.

Writing Style

This maybe a personal thing but sometimes I found the writing very confusing. There is shift between different eras and there is no indication of when that happens. So sometimes I found myself getting confused, but the story was still clear and it was not a major issue as we get used to it later on.

Apart from that, the writing style is very good.

Characters

I HATED a lot of the characters in this book. I don't want to mention why but I will say that there were moments I just stopped reading just because of how people talked to the protagonist. And the protagonist herself was kind of annoying at times because of the way she behaved and made decisions.

And Violet is super creepy. She's also the most interesting character in the book because her actions are unpredictable and since everything is from the mother's perspective we don't really get to know her fully/accurately.

What I loved about the book

There is main event that takes place which is the turning point in the book. But we don't really know what happened in that event. We don't know if something is really wrong with the daughter or if the mother delusional. Till the end we keep guessing. And last page reveals something bizzare. I love endings like this which just gives you more questions than answers. And this is very new book(at the time I writing) so I couldn't find a lot of discussions on this book. I really would love to hear others' interpretations of the characters and story.

I would really like a sequel to this book, though it probably won't happen ;___;

Final Verdit

I would give it a 5 but still I was not 100% happy with the writing style, I'll give it a 4.

My rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
