TL;DR This is such a good and original horror story with great characters and a gripping narration. Go for it, if you like such stories!

Hi everyone! I guess I'm finally back to reviewing books again. I have had a really hard time trying to find books I enjoy reading (kind of tired of mystery/thriller novels). Coraline is something I picked up simply because of the interesting premise it has got and here's what I thought about it... (Note: This review would be somewhat unstructured and highly personal)

Some Quick Info before I start:

Author Neil Gaiman
Pages210
Published Date2 July 2002

Premise: Coraline moves with her family to a new house and finds herself really bored as her parents are workaholic and she doesn't have much to do by herself. This is until she finds a door to a new place which is far more exciting and meets her “other mother” and “other father” who seem really nice and attentive to her. But something is really off about these “other” parents and the new place.....

Plot

I loved the plot, the setting, descriptions and imagery of everything that happens in the book. Of course, being a children’s book some parts in the book were predictable but that doesn’t ruin the experience. I found the story gripping from the first page till the end, no boring parts at all. I also loved how the story was kept somewhat vague and not fully explained (I got a lot of questions). This lead to a lot of interesting fan theories on the internet which I loved reading.

Characters

There are very few characters in the book- Coraline, her parents, few neighbours, rats and a cat. But each and every character is unique and memorable and has a huge role to play in the story.

What I liked about the book

This may sound strange but I really, really liked the protagonist. She is introverted and curious. She loves exploring. Her inner monologues and interactions with other characters are all interesting and I think she’s kind of the person I would love be friends with. I also loved other-mother character who is also refered to as Beldam. She is terrifying and mysterious. I love her character design and I think she’s one of the main reasons why this book got famous.

Final Verdit

This book was surprising such a fun read for me. I’d go on say that this book helped me get out of a massive reading slump and for that I’m very grateful to the book and the author. I never knew I would really like a children’s book to this extent. To be honest, I think this book would be suitable for readers of all ages (provided you’re not someone who get’s creeped out easily, in that case stay away)

Oh and there’s also a movie adaptation of this book and I’m going to be watching it pretty soon. Very excited about that!

My final rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Some Trivia

  1. The author started writing this novel for his 4 year old daugher who loved narrating stories about witches pretending to be mothers of young female characters.
  2. The book was supposed to be only a short story of about 2,000 words long but eventually turned out to be a novel which took almost 10 years to be completed.

That's all from me, I know I have been gone for a while (almost a year) but I'm glad to be back and I'll be a lot more consistent...hopefully xD Bye!
